Bamileke masks are carved to honor the king, or "fon." They are displayed during important ceremonies to celebrate the presence of the ancestor spirits of the king. They are believed to promote fertile fields for a good harvest. Masks with beads represent great wisdom, while animal masks represent the belief that the king, or fon, could transform into an animal in order to facilitate communication with the ancestors.
