Fang masks were one of the African art forms that inspired Pablo Picasso's work in Cubism. Traditional Ngil masks were used by officials during the persecution of criminals as well as during the initiation ceremonies of young men. Ngil masks were banned by French colonialists in 1910, however the masks have returned in various forms.
